Angelica Belin

Nikangel’s Plastic Temptation

A Fine Art Exhibition of Mixed Media & Photography

Reflecting the mysticism of religion with satire opens a conversation for questioning the unknown. Playing with the illusions of divinity and humanity, Angelica Belin meshes designed photographs with a physical installation to convey images of good, evil and cross-culturalism. While crafting scenic pictures with the mannequins as models, Belin juxtaposes the true vibrancy of the individual with the synthetic shells of temptation to explore the roots of belief. By utilizing allegory to demonstrate the manufactured nature of religion, Belin’s plastic mannequins represent the hollowness and conformity that is tied into dogmatic faith.

"This self portrait is a re-enactment of my own eclectic duality and my search for answers.”

Even before moving from Boston to South Florida in ‘86, Belin, a Colombian native, started painting at age 12. While enhancing her techniques, Belin has earned a BFA from the University of Florida at New World School of The Arts in ‘98. Following graduation, Belin became a graphic designer for WSVN Channel 7 News - her work was featured as on-air images with Help Me Howard, Deco Drive and daily news segments. Currently Angelica is an arts teacher at Citrus Grove Elementary in Miami and is working towards a MFA at Florida International University. Belin’s teaching skills have also been utilized by the South Florida Art Center, Miami Children’s Museum, Campbell Drive Middle School and Abbrakadooddle.

With a dynamic that merges abstract representationalism, multiculturalism and experimentation, Belin cites Hans Bellmer, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Brothers Quay, Jane’s Addiction, Joy Division, Miles Davis, David Bowie, People From Venus and Ben Belin (her husband) as focal beacons for her innovative vision. Over the years, Belin’s artwork was presented in various showcases including the Fredrick Snitzer Gallery in ‘98, the Coconut Grove Art Fair in ‘03, Borders Gallery in ‘07 and The White Room in ‘08.

As another artistic outlet, Belin sings, plays guitar and keyboards and designs costumes in a performance art group called Petunio, which was recognized as the Most Avant Garde Band from Tobacco Road’s Status Quo Awards in ‘08. In addition, Angelica continues to expand her experiences with painting, graphic design and multi-media video projects. The Wallflower Gallery is proud to present Angelica Belin as a featured artist for this 2009 Fine Art Exhibition.
